High blood pressure (hypertension) is a key risk factor for heart, kidney, eye disease and strokes. We offer blood pressure checks, medication management, and lifestyle recommendations to help you maintain your health 

Blood tests play a key role in the early detection, monitoring, and management of a wide range of health conditions, supporting your overall wellbeing and helping you live a better quality of life.  

Your doctor may refer you for blood tests if deemed necessary in the following situations: 

• Routine monitoring: if you have a chronic condition, regular blood tests can help track your health. Your GP will advise on the frequency of these. 
• Symptom investigation: if you are experiencing symptoms that require further investigations, a blood test may help identify the cause. 
• Preventative health checks: blood tests may be used to assess risk factors for conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or thyroid disorders. 

Bloods are sent to Awanui Labs for analysis. Results are then reviewed by your doctor and are made available to enrolled patients via myindici™, or by text or phone. 

With the exception of some specialised tests, most lab results are available within a few days. 

Cardiovascular disease (heart attack or stroke) is the leading cause of death in NZ.  

A cardiovascular risk assessment (CVRA) will let you know what your risk is of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 5 years. We offer guidance on lifestyle changes, medication management, and preventive care to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.  

CVRA is recommended for women from 55 years (45 years if you are Māori, Pacific or Asian) and men from 45 years (35 years if you are Māori, Pacific or Asian). These assessments are funded for some patients.  

If you are experiencing chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat, call 111 immediately. 

Our doctors can complete the assessment and forms required for most certification requirements, including sick notes, WINZ, ACC forms, driving medicals, insurance medicals, and pre-employment medicals. 

Please note some certificates and medicals are not funded and incur additional fees.  

Cervical cancer is highly treatable if detected early. All women and people with a cervix aged 25-69 who have ever had intimate skin-to-skin contact or been sexually active should have regular cervical screening every three years. Together, regular screening and HPV immunisation provide the best protection against cervical cancer.  

You should get screened even if you:  

• are immunised against HPV 
• are single
• only have sex with women
• have been through menopause
• are no longer having sex
• If you have had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) check with your nurse or doctor if you still need to be screened. 

There are now more options for how you have cervical screening done: 

• a simple vaginal swab test for HPV, either done yourself or with help from a healthcare professional
•  a cervical sample taken by a healthcare professional (used to be known as a smear test). 

Talk with your healthcare provider to decide which option is best for you. 

If HPV is found, you may need to have a follow-up test or be referred directly for colposcopy.

All immunisations on the national schedule for children are free until they reach 18 years of age. 

You can make an appointment with the practice nurse for your child’s immunisation. The New Zealand National Immunisation Schedule shows which immunisations (including boosters) your child is recommended to have between the ages of six weeks and twelve years, and when they need them. It is very important that vaccines are given at the correct time to protect people who are most vulnerable to illness, especially children and older people. 

The immunisation schedule helps to protect children from preventable diseases such as: 

• Chickenpox
• Diphtheria

Chronic Disease Management is a proactive, long-term approach to healthcare that focuses on helping patients manage their ongoing condition.  

We provide a comprehensive disease management programme including screening and ongoing management of diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, asthma, COPD and heart failure. 

We offer contraceptive advice, prescriptions, and fitting/removal of contraceptive devices such as IUDs (coils) and implants.  

Your choice of contraception will depend on your age, health and the status of your relationship. Talk to your doctor or nurse if you are unsure which method is best for you. They will ask about your health so they can recommend the safest contraception for you. 

Options include:  

• Condoms  
• Oral contraception  
• Depo Provera  
• Long-acting reversible contraceptives (IUD/Mirena, Jadelle Implant, Copper intrauterine device) 
• Emergency Contraceptive Pill (Morning after pill)

Funding is now available for long-acting reversible contraception. Please discuss your eligibility with your GP or nurse. 

COVID-19 Vaccines are now available at ProMed for eligible patients.  

• If you’re aged 5 years or over, you’re eligible for a free primary COVID-19 vaccine. 
• If you’re aged 30 years or over, you’re eligible for a free COVID-19 booster every 6 months. 
• Patients under 30 who are at higher risk are also eligible for a free booster every 6 months (similar criteria to those for a free flu vaccine). 
• A non-funded COVID-19 vaccine is expected to be available soon for patients who aren’t eligible for funded doses.

Pfizer is the only COVID-19 vaccine available for use in New Zealand.

For health & safety we ask people with respiratory infection symptoms to remain in the car park or stay at home. The doctor or nurse will then call you for your appointment. If you need an in-person consultation, then our staff will arrange this during your call.  

Diabetes is a serious condition where the level of glucose in the blood is too high. There are two types, caused by either a lack of insulin (type 1) or increased insulin resistance (type 2). Diabetes can lead to serious complications, including kidney failure, blindness, limb amputation, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. 

Diabetes is often silent and therefore we recommend everyone is checked, especially if you are over 40 years of age or have risk factors. Find out if you are at risk here 

Diabetes can have a big impact on individuals and their whānau. We’re here to work with you to help minimise that impact, offering lifestyle advice (nutrition and activity), medicine management, and support. Diagnostic testing or screening can be discussed with your doctor. 

ProMed Doctors provides medical assessments for patients who require a medical certificate for their driver licence. 

These assessments help determine whether you are medically fit to drive safely and may be required when renewing certain licences or endorsements, reaching certain ages, or if you have a medical condition that could affect your ability to drive safely. 

An appointment for driver’s license medical includes time with the nurse and doctor. 

You may need a driver medical if you are: 

• Turning 75 years old or older – medical assessments are required at age 75, age 80, and every 2 years thereafter. 
• Applying for or renewing a heavy vehicle licence (Classes 2, 3, 4 or 5), if a medical certificate has not been provided within the previous 5 years. 
• Applying for or renewing certain endorsements, including Passenger (P), Vehicle Recovery (V), Driving Instructor (I), or Testing Officer (O). 
• Living with a medical or mental health condition that could affect your ability to drive safely. 

Please note: If you drive to your appointment and do not pass your driver medical, you will not be permitted to drive home. This applies to medicals for existing licence holders such as age-related assessments or health condition reviews. Please arrange an alternative way home in case this happens.

An ECG (electrocardiogram) is a recording of your heart’s electrical activity. Electrode patches attached to your skin measure the electrical impulses your heart gives off, producing a trace that can show information about previous heart attacks or problems with heart rhythm. It is a common procedure, often carried out after a patient has had unusual chest pain or dizziness.   

It is available for acute illness or when needed for insurance or other examinations. 

The procedure:  

• Small electrodes are placed on your arms, legs and chest while you lie still 
• The procedure lasts between 5-10 minutes 
• No electricity is put into your body 
• You will not experience any pain or discomfort 

Getting vaccinated each year is recommended as the single most effective way to reduce your chances of getting the flu. The vaccine can also greatly reduce your risk of serious complications that can develop from the flu. 

The flu vaccine is free if you: 

• Are aged 6 months to under 5 years 
• Are 65 years or older 
• Are pregnant (Can be given at any stage of pregnancy) 
• Regularly use an asthma preventer 
• Have diabetes 
• Have kidney problems 
• Have heart disease 
• Have cancer 
• Have a serious medical condition.

We provide GP consultations for everyday health concerns, ongoing care, preventative health, ACC injuries, and referrals.

As a general practice, we provide primary healthcare across every domain of your health. Our doctors are skilled in diagnosing and identifying a wide range of health concerns and will refer you to specialists if further assessment or treatment is required.  

Immunisation is now available to protect women against common types of HPV which cause around 70 percent of cervical cancer. This is funded and available from the age of 11 until 26 years. Please discuss the scheduling and doses with one of our nurses. The ideal time to have this vaccination is prior to any sexual contact. The vaccine does not protect against all HPV types; therefore, women who have been immunised must continue to have smear tests. 

Liquid nitrogen can be used to treat verrucas, some skin lesions and warts. A doctor’s consultation is needed prior to liquid nitrogen to determine if this is the best form of treatment. Once the lesion is diagnosed, consecutive treatments will be carried out by the nurse. Often the lesion will require more than one treatment. The treatments must be a minimum of two weeks apart.  

We encourage our male patients to see their GP regularly for all medical concerns including:

Pharmacists ensure your prescriptions are dispensed correctly and that the medicine and dose are appropriate for you, so you get the maximum benefit from your medicines. Your pharmacist can help you understand what your medicines are for, how to take them, possible side effects, and how to store them safely.

If you are experiencing pain or injury, physiotherapy can help you to reduce and manage your pain and to optimise your function.
